Tucked away in the scenic landscapes of Butler County, Ohio, Rentschler Forest Preserve offers a myriad of trails that promise not only a serene escape into nature but also a treasure trove of opportunities for photographers. Among these, the Pond Trail stands out, particularly for those in pursuit of capturing a unique and mesmerizing natural phenomenon – a distinct line of parallel tree rows that adorn the trail, creating a visual spectacle unlike any other. Maybe it's a stretch to call is a phenomenon because I am certain they were planted by man, but these trees are tucked away and all of the local photographers want to keep it a secret- they will tell you to go to Rentschler Forest, knowing your phone's GPS will take you to the playground, boat ramp area or soccer fields, knowing that you won't find these beautiful trees. Look no further, because I will not be gatekeeping this location- I figured since I struggled to find them, I would love to be the one to outline exactly how to get there!

Getting There


Your journey begins in the parking lot near Shafer Farm Cemetery, located off Hamilton Middletown Road and Rentschler Estates Drive- turn onto Rentschler Estates Drive and on the left hand side you will see a rention pond- turn left onto the road directly following the pond. Immediately you will see a parking lot. After parking, you’ll notice a clearing that marks the entrance to the Earthworks Trail, which branches into two paths: the Pond Trail and the Mound Trail. However, it’s the Pond Trail that photographers with a keen eye for nature’s symmetry should focus on. The trails are labeled by signs that should be relatively easy to see as long as the brush is not overgrown.

THE TRAIL AND ITS SEASONS


The Mound Trail intersects with the Pond Trail. The second you step through the clearing, you are Pond Trail- walk approximately .25 miles down from the parking lot and do not turn down the intersecting Mound Trail- just walk straight, plain and simple! You will know when you are in the right spot, because on the right-hand side you will see the breathtaking alignment of pine trees standing tall in parallel rows, presenting a perfect subject for photography.


A word to the wise: the trail reveals different facets of its beauty across the seasons. However, during winter and spring, it transforms, becoming extremely muddy. This seasonal change, while challenging, adds a raw and natural texture to the landscape, offering a unique backdrop for photographers. Some are wanting to photograph the trees themselves while others are wanting to photograph clients, using the trees a stunning background. I would HIGHLY recommend that you wear hiking boots and that your client brings a change of shoes, unless they want them to be covered in mud just in time for their photos.

NAVIGATING THE TRAIL


While there is a gravel road running parallel to the cemetery that offers access to the trails, it's recommended to follow the actual trail that is visible from the parking lot to truly immerse in the experience and locate the pine trees with ease. This path not only leads you directly to the scenic rows of trees but also allows you to experience the full beauty and tranquility of Rentschler Forest.
